Why Your Damage Numbers Are Lying to You: The Hidden Math of Ulala Combat

Ulala: Idle Adventure hands you a screen full of numbers and trusts you to figure out the rest. Attack here, defense there, crit chance winking at you from the corner. But here's the thing about idle game combat: the stats you see and the math that decides fights are not always the same animal.
I've spent way too many evenings running numbers, comparing gear sets, and watching damage logs like they're season finales. This is what I found, translated from spreadsheet-speak into plain English.
The Core Formula, Roughly Speaking
Under the hood, Ulala's damage works like most games in the genre: your attack gets compared against the target's defense, and the difference determines your actual hit. The important part — the part the game never tells you — is that defense has diminishing returns against high attack, but crushing returns against low attack.
What that means in practice: if your attack is way below a boss's defense threshold, no amount of crit chance will save you. You're rolling dice with a wet noodle. But once your attack clears a certain point relative to the enemy's defense, every additional point of attack starts punching at nearly full weight.
This is why two players with identical "power scores" can have wildly different stage progress. Power score treats all stats as equal. The combat math absolutely does not.
Attack Is King (Until It Isn't)
Because of how the defense interaction works, raw attack is the single most efficient stat for pushing campaign stages. Wall stages are usually defense checks in disguise — the boss isn't out-damaging you, it's shrugging you off.
But there's a catch, and it's a big one: attack scales linearly while crit multiplies. Once you're past a wall and into content where you're already landing solid hits, crit chance and crit damage start pulling ahead. The sweet spot most players find is roughly 40–60% crit chance with crit damage stacked behind it. Below that, you're leaving multiplier value on the table. Above that, the law of diminishing returns comes knocking.
The Overrated Stats Nobody Wants to Admit
Every stat tier list has some sacred cows, and it's time to tip a few over.
Flat HP on DPS characters. Sounds responsible! Feels safe! But in Ulala's content, most fights are decided by whether you kill the enemy before the enemy kills you — and your DPS character's extra HP rarely changes that equation. Healers and tanks? Different story. Your frontline absolutely wants HP. Your damage dealers want to end fights faster, not survive them longer.
Haste on everyone. Attack speed feels amazing, and in PvP it genuinely matters. But for idle farming and boss pushes, most of your damage comes from skill rotations where haste contributes far less than raw stats. Haste is a PvP stat wearing a PvE costume.
Lifesteal on non-sustain classes. It's a nice comfort stat, but comfort doesn't clear wall stages.
Class-by-Class Build Priorities
Based on the math, here's how I'd stack stats for each role.
Warriors
Defense and HP first — not because the math is complicated, but because your entire job is making the enemy's attack formula work as badly as possible against you. After survivability thresholds are met for your current content, pour everything else into attack so you're not just a punching bag with opinions.
Hunters
Crit chance to that 40–60% sweet spot, then crit damage, then attack. Hunters are your multiplier machines — they're built to exploit crit scaling harder than any other class. Attack first is fine early, but crit takes over as your gear improves.
Mages
Attack, attack, and more attack, with crit as the supporting act. Mage skills tend to hit big and slow, which means fewer chances for crit to trigger per fight — so raw hit size matters more for you than for a Hunter. Skip haste almost entirely in PvE builds.
Supports
Healing scales off attack in most cases, so supports want a light attack investment plus all the HP and defense they can carry. A dead healer heals zero people, a fact my tribesmates learned the hard way roughly 47 times.
Putting It Into Practice
If you remember one thing from all this, make it this: read the fight, not the power score. Stuck on a wall stage? Your problem is almost certainly attack versus defense, not a stat shortage everywhere at once. Losing arena matches to burst? Crit and speed matter more there than in any farming run.
The game hides its math because the math is the game. Once you know which levers actually move the machine, those shiny misleading stats stop tempting you — and your damage numbers stop lying.
